Literally just around the corner from us is the Discovery Museum. Packed with interactive exhibitions exploring life on Tyneside including the area’s maritime heritage, how the famous bridges were built and special displays for kids under 5 and 7 years.
The award-winning Life Science Centre is less than 5 minutes walk from our front door and packed with imaginative interactive displays and special events. The main exhibition explains the story of human life from our evolution to the current world and the challenges and opportunities in our future. Life also features the biggest planetarium in the north with a stunning, engrossing journey through the stars. At the Life Theatre live science shows are performed daily or take a trip on the Motion Ride simulator.
Incorporating a variety of collections kids will love the displays at the Great North Museum including the Living Planet area with aquariums, live reptiles and hands-on investigations or visit the interactive Hadrian’s Hall, life sized T-Rex or mummies from Ancient Egypt.
Dedicated to children’s books, it is said there are only 7 stories in the world but a thousand ways to tell them and Seven Stories is about those thousand ways. The main exhibition regularly changes, recent examples include “There's Nuffin Like a Puffin' charting 70 years of Puffin publishing and the work of John Burningham in 'Mr Grumpy and Other Outings'. Seven Stories is set under Byker Bridge, about 2km from us.
Located about 9km from the city centre is Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum (you can take the Metro from St James’ to Wallsend, Segedunum is couple of minutes walk from Wallsend Station). Originally the eastern gateway to Hadrian’s Wall and home to a garrison of 600 Roman Soldiers, Segedunum guarded the frontier for 300 years. The site has been excavated and now includes an enthralling museum on all things Roman.
In the Yellow Mall of the Metrocentre, Namco Funscape includes Ten Pin and Techno bowling, the fastest dodgem track in Europe, arcade with American Pool tables and Pacman Soft Play area for the little ones.
